Shivering Window ☂ Pretty Creepers
~Walking home in the eye of the storm~
It took a while to decide which song of Shivering Window’s small online catalogue to use, but eventually I settled on the song that seems to be the project’s frontrunner as far as “pop” sensibilities go. In his submission email Shivering Window aka Matthew Gray explained his music as
“Sounding a little like Guided by Voices if they’d been influenced by Throbbing Gristle and Rudimentary Peni instead of Genesis and the Who,”
I think as a musician when you listen to a song that even vaguely resembles the music you make, you determine if you like the track or not as if you yourself were controlling the composition and direction of the music.
I’ve been a fan of Guided By Voices for a very long time but within their music; 70% of the time they always zig when I wouldve zagged.
The same goes for Shivering Window except I can honestly say I can connect more with this project than I ever could with Guided By Voices.
All the released Shivering Window songs border on the two and a half minute mark and Gray’s music finds a way to be concise yet constantly different.
The textures of his songs are thin and frail with extremely minimal or no recorded percussion. The songs are heartfelt yet totally disconnected, the gritty fuzzy guitars can give off some serious Sebadoh vibes but I think it suits Shivering Window’s music beautifully.
This is DEFINITELY “Walking home on a windy day under a stormy sky” music.
